Discovering North Garden Virginia

Five Top Places to Visit in the Heart of Virginia Wine Country

I was recently asked what and where is North Garden? I was taken off guard, I guess I thought everyone in Central Virginia knew about little North Garden, thus prompting a response from me, what can I add to the facts? North Garden, located just minutes south of Charlottesville in Albemarle County is home to long time multi-generation farms, apple orchards, the historic Cocke’s Mill House and the Crossroads Tavern Inn, both included on the National Register of Historic Places; and more recently, Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards, one of the nation’s dream luxury wedding venues. The winery, tasting room and the Granary, a 3,600-square-foot event space are strikingly sited on a slope advantageously overlooking lush vineyards and the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains within the 2,300 acre conservation based community of Bundoran Farm . The property itself, aside from the rustically elegant structures, offer a multitude of breathtaking photo ops even an amateur phone selfie can capture! We often stop in for a locally sourced light lunch paired with the 2021 Sparkling Blanc de Blanc, because everyday should be a celebration!

Limelight Hydrangeas Create An Elegant Approach for Visitors and Bridal Parties

A little further down the road you’ll find Loving Cup, another winery in North Garden on a much smaller scale, more cozy and casual, pet friendly, family run and known for it’s certified organic vineyards, apparently one of only three certified on the entire East Coast. The vineyard is on the family owned 150 acre farm and you are welcome to bring your own picnic and non-alcoholic beverages, sit back, relax, enjoy the view, the people and the wine! Even your dogs will love Loving Cup!

Cideries & Distilleries

It’s getting to be that time of year! Apples, especially heirloom apples from Virginia including Albemarle Pippin and Old Virginia Winesap! Fall is just around the corner and with the crisp weather comes mouthwatering ciders, just a short jaunt down 29 from Charlottesville you’ll encounter two cideries, Albemarle Ciderworks and Potters Craft Cider. Albemarle Ciderworks is technically in North Garden and Potters Craft is just shy of being considered North Garden. No matter what, both are worth of a stop, and by the way, every season can be cider season! Please check the hours, they can vary a bit seasonally and you may catch live music in the orchard at Albemarle Ciderworks. Potters Craft has a bit of a twisty-back, winding drive approach off 29 but you’ll love what you find at the top, a sprawling garden style wrap around patio and a tasting room tucked inside the thick stone walls of a former Episcopalian chapel. Music events, weddings and receptions are all available at Potters Craft.

Potters Craft: Shady Seating, Lovely Boxwood Gardens and Stone Patio, Even Bocce Ball!

Beef & Bourbon

Do not miss Ragged Branch Distillery, a working farm where you can taste and purchase Bourbon and Rye Whiskey distilled from their own grain. They mash, distill, age and bottle right on the property. The beef is from cattle on the farm and their nearby farm of Pounding Branch and interestingly, the cattle are fed with the residual mash from the distillation process. You can purchase beef Monday to Thursday at the distillery and at the tasting room only open on weekends, Friday through Sunday. Easy to find, between the turn off to Potters Craft and before Albemarle Ciderworks & Pippin Hill, take a right turn on Taylor’s Gap Rd, a scenic drive meandering approximately 3 miles from 29/ Monocan Trail and just past the lovely estate homes of Blandemar.

Hopefully by now, if you haven’t made a trip to North Garden, we’ve at least piqued your interest! This is an up and coming area with much of the land in conservation and endeavoring to maintain the rural sustainable landscape that makes Central Virginia so desirable. If you are in the market for a home or we’ve tempted you, we would encourage you to consider a lovely property within minutes of each of these destinations. 2028 Middlebranch Dr is in a private neighborhood of five homes in Middlebranch Farms. With approximately 2500 finished square feet in the main house, the all brick traditional Virginia style home sits on a level lawn, quietly secluded and surrounded by hardwood trees on 12+ acres. Attached via a soaring breezeway is a 1302 Sq.Ft cottage/ guest house with it’s own electric meter and septic system featuring two separate entries and all main level living. The possibilities for the cottage vary from an income producing rental to a home perfect for extended family members whether full time or occasional visits. Both homes can easily become one by enclosing the breezeway thereby creating a totally separated master suite. The extensive patio/ deck areas are perfect for gatherings and there is more than sufficient room for a swimming pool to be added. The home could also serve as a vacation home/ “family and friends getaway” for Northern Virginians who escape often to Charlottesville. This property is currently listed for sale and can be viewed by appointment, Call 434-882-0824. MLS#643255

Albemarle Estate and Trump Winery: A Girls Night Out

Lumina_Boston_Photography_www.luminaboston.com_Charlottesville_Wedding_photographer_Trump_Albemarle_Estate_-0057Itā€™s all about presentation, whether it’s a creatively garnished plate in an elegant Michelin rated restaurant, an exquisitely wrapped gift or the initial dramatic entrance as you approach an estate property. It is an announcement of what is to come, a tantalizing expectation of an anticipated experience. In this case, large iron gates supported by heavy brick columns with the name Albemarle Estate and Trump Winery announce your passage into a world of opulence. We had arrived!Lumina_Boston_Photography_www.luminaboston.com_Charlottesville_Wedding_photographer_Trump_Albemarle_Estate_-0054Iā€™ve been fortunate to be in attendance at some of the major events at Albemarle Estate including the announcement of the acquisition of the winery by Donald Trump , the official Ā ribbon cutting for Albemarle Estate Bed and Breakfast, gala events and a recent wine makers sparkling brunch. While researching Ā places to stay around Charlottesville, I couldnā€™t find a write up by anyone who had actually stayed at the B & B. As a member of the Trump Winery Wine Club and living in Charlottesville, I decided what better place for an indulgent girls getaway? No beach house for this group! No way!

Fabulously groomed ornamental gardens with tucked away sculptures, fountains, blooming Dogwoods, Cherry and Apple trees, Wisteria draping over arbors and perfectly chilled glasses of sparkling Trump Blanc de Blanc Chardonnay Ā awaited us.

Graciously, the men in our family Ā took over the job of babysitting and keeping up on the home front as we headed out on our own for a retreat a mere 30 minutes away in Albemarle County.

Bye Bye Daddy! Bye Bye Elena!

The Surprise

After being buzzed in through the gate, we were able to park right Ā in front of the 26,000 square foot 45 room Georgian style mansion now Bed and Breakfast recently acquired by Donald Trump and part of the Trump Hotel Collection. We were greeted and delightedly found out we had our accommodations upgraded to the premier William and Mary Suite! Ā With Ā two luxurious Ā separate bedrooms, each with King size beds sumptuously made with 100% goose down pillows and comforters and Italian BellinoĀ bed linens, two Ā 55 inch LCD flat screen HDTV’s, and a Nespresso Beverage system. Ā The suite is Ā accessed via an alcove adjoined by a private dining room. Each of the two bathrooms boasted aĀ wonderful extra long claw foot tub with all the spa Trump bath goodies, and a separate hot steam shower. This is my kind of living!

The CelebrationIMG_7989

Myself, my sister from London, our daughter in law fromĀ SĆ£o Paulo, Brazil and most recently, Raleigh, N.C., and Ā our daughter presently residing Ā in the Boston area, all came to celebrate being together, birthday, and friendship in Charlottesville Ā for a “Girls Getaway”. Ā The last time we were together was almost 4 years ago and it was entirely too long. Book bridesmaid parties, a fun time with your besties, your Ā book club or whatever, for a ridiculously wonderful “Girls Night Out”-preferably two nights if you can manage it-it takes a while to wind down. But do plan ahead. I planned this early and we scheduled on an off day which allowed us incredible privacy, lots of laughs and an all round grand experience. The more people in your group, the less you have to worry about bothering others since it is a quite intimate setting and others are looking for sanctuary as well. In retrospect, Ā It was a good idea that we had reserved during the week since the following day all 10 rooms were completely booked. The estate is a perfect venue Ā for weddings, functions and romantic weekends near the Monticello Wine Trail.

Pool Time

Check in is at 3 p.m., if you get there right on time, Ā (we actually sneaked in a bit early, nabbed a freshly baked hot chocolate chip cookie or two, towels, lovely spa bathrobes) Ā head straight out to the pool. The staff Ā are quietly available to serve your needs and will give you a complete tour of Albemarle House prior to settling into your room or afterwards. The pool had just been heated and the hot tub was deliciously inviting after a cool Spring and welcome sunny day. Poolside towels are available, water bottles and Ā the fireplace in the cabana Ā can be lit for you upon request. The fitness room is nearby at the main house if you must workout as well as bicycles to ride around the property and vineyards.

Whatā€™s for Dinner?

Pay attention to the time, it slips away quickly and your options include heading back into town for dinner which is about a twenty minute drive, or (what we did) take advantage of the complimentary wine tasting at the Trump Winery, just off the grounds of the estate. They offer delicious fare and we called ahead to have our food ready to complement our tasting. They can also prepare plates “to go” and take back with you to the estate leaving you more time to enjoy the surroundings.

One of the more popular and unique wines outside of the award winning sparkling wines at Trump is Cru, a dessert wine created by blending Chardonnay juice with grape brandy Ā then aged for over a year in American bourbon barrels. With 14% residual sugar and flavors of citrus, pear and a little bourbon, it can also be used as a mixer as well as an aperitif. It never fails, when Iā€™m at the winery, there are always people walking away with a bottle or case of Cru. On our return, we took advantage of my favorite perk at Albemarle Estate (and the hardest item to give up) the electronic gate opener. Oh how desperately I wanted to keep it, while it was in my car we could pretend we were pulling up to Ā home !

Early 2014 Harvest at Trump Winery

Trump_Cork

Being first is nothing new to Donald Trump and, in this case, timing is everything.

Known for associating their brand with luxury and the finer things in life, the sound of a popping cork and tiny effervescent bubbles racing to the top are symbolic of this latest of Trump ventures. Trump blew into the Virginia countryside in early October 2011 with a clapping helicopter entrance and media show announcing his arrival onto the Monticello AVA scene and in a flash set in motion the transference of ownership from Kluge Estate to his namesake.

With 95 acres of grapes dedicated to sparkling wines, the 2014 harvest began as Ā a “crunch to the crush”. Ā The consumption of Champagne and sparkling wine has been on the rise and Trump Winery was poised to meet that demand. After an unseasonably cool Summer, little rain and hot August days approaching,Ā Ā the time to pick the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes for sparkling wines was quickly upon us in the Charlottesville area. Due to their micro-climate, location and a desire to have a more acidic grape desirable for sparkling wines, Trump is one of the earliest vineyards in Virginia to start picking grapes (as early as August 7th). Ā If we got rain too soon, as was in the original forecast for the 9th and 10th of August, the grapes could become saturated affecting the sugar (brixx) level which is so critical. Ā Harvesting grapes at night and into the cool morning hours is ideal for a champagne style wine. Ā Vineyard managers believe that night harvests result in grapes with better sugar levels and Ā acidity. Ā It is also easier on the workers who are hand picking without having to labor in the heat of the day.

Trump_Vineyards

On Sunday August 10th, accompanied by my husband and our daughter ( our photographer) we set off for a visit to the Trump Winery tasting room. Ā The transformation from Kluge Estate was quite apparent with the Trump logo everywhere emblazoned on polo shirts, on chocolate bars looking newly minted in silver and gold and on the black shirted tasting room team attending to the guests. Ā Even the bathroom fixtures appear gilded!

Business is certainly thriving at Trump and the tasting room filled rapidly, but not before we had quick assistance from lovely Judi Bowers, opening a bottle of theĀ Trump BrutĀ SparklingĀ RosĆ© 2009 to taste. Ā Great choice, Judi! Ā Armed with our Champagne glasses and an ice bucket we headed outdoors.

judi_bowers_trump_winery

One of the best decisions ( in my opinion) Ā made at the tasting room since Trump had taken ownership Ā was opening up the vista off the larger outdoor patio. Previously the outdoor space had been surrounded by trees and dense natural foliage obscuring the view. Now a picture-postcard, artist-inspiring view draws guests out to rough picnic tables with a pastoral scene of vineyards and a lake in the distance. Ā Just off the patio and tasting bar is a garden smelling ripe with tomatoes.

Charlottesville_Trump_Winery_ViewĀ The salmon colored sparkling wine paired beautifully in taste and appearance with our selection of a rustic bacon lettuce tomato sandwich and a Caprese salad of heirloom tomatoes. We savored the experience and our glass of Brut Rose before heading out on the hike across the road through the vineyards. As we Ā approached Ā the vines seemed to come alive with the rustling Ā sounds of Ā invisible workers Ā hidden below the vines laughing and singing as they selected the best clusters of grapes to clip. Moving rapidly up the rows and bringing in the bunches of grapes was a pleasure to watch.

Listen and perhaps the next time you pop open a bottle of sparkling wine from Central Virginia Ā you may Ā hear some of the laughter and song in the rising bubbles!

We hope you enjoy your next bottle of Trump bubbly as much as we did.

A Beautiful Day- Horseback Riding in Virginia Vineyards

Ashton_Beebe_Indian _Summer _Guide_Service
Ashton Beebe of Indian Summer Guide Service in Virginia offers vineyard horseback rides

It’s a Beautiful Day, Sky Falls, You feel Like It’s a Beautiful Day, Don’t Let it Get Away- U2

Crystal skies, frosty winds coursing the rows of dormant grape vines anchored on slopes of the Virginia piedmont….feeling the snowy terroir under hoof… it was a beautiful day.

Whether you’re a horse lover, wine lover or outdoor enthusiast, a ride on horseback through the Virginia vineyards appeals to the romantic in all of us. Don’t believe me? Gentleman, ask your spouse or girlfriend if she would like to venture out on horseback, escorted by a professional guide and finish at the tasting room of one of three spectacular award winning Ā wineries. Ā Ladies, ask your husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends or bridesmaids if they would enjoy a private tour like I just described….exactly! Ā Which is the same reason that I arranged for my sister ( fellow oenophile-fancy name for wino) and I to do just that!

Ashton_Beebe_Saddling_Up
Cville UnCorked in Saddle

Veritas, King Family, Pollak Vineyards and Glass House Winery all snuggle up to the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains with views that arguably beat Napa Valley hands down. Ā All three wineries have joined with local cowboy, Ashton Beebe and his Indian Summer Guide Service, to provide a sensory experience that shouldn’t be missed. If you have any apprehensions about riding, no worries here, these horses are accustomed to the terrain and easy as can be with any novice rider.

Veritas_Vineyard_Horseback_Riding
Chloe Hodson on Horseback at Veritas

We selected Veritas Winery Ā for our tour and would have gladly hit all three if time had allowed. Two Socks, Beau and Murphy (Quarter Horse Pintos) were brushed down and ready for our ride. Ashton had requested the lovely Chloe Hodson,Ā Ā Manager of the Farmhouse and Retreat Ā at Veritas, to join us for an education about the grape varieties, the terroir and the history of Veritas. Ā We mounted and set off towards the slopes above Veritas casually chatting, getting accustomed to the gait of the horses. Ā In a matter of moments, we had established a connection-multiple connections-between the four of us. Chloe immediately tripped to the fact that her boyfriend, Elliott Watkins, assistant winemaker to sister Emily Pelton and originally Ā from the U.K. , graduated from Ā Plumpton College in England,Ā for wine making, the same school that my sister is attending for her WSET. Ā I knew Ashton’s family from years before where we attended church together. Small world!

The ride was comfortable, horses snorting in conversation with each other, and we continued to ascend the slopes. Should you have any reservations about riding, Ashton will put you at ease and the horses follow each other, easily used to mountain trail rides. I wanted to take pictures with my camera, no easy task when Ā you’re trying to relax and just take in the moment; but Ashton was riding, reigning single handedly and snapping pictures with his own camera. A nice surprise and we lapsed into just savouring the experience. Ā At the highest elevation on our ride, Chloe pointed out a slope where future vines would be planted and quite possibly be tended on horseback due to the steepness. It was at this point that I felt like I was in Montana, Ā in another era, bygone days and away from the hustle of business, cars and crowds.

Virginia is for Wine & Horse Lovers

Following our ride, we entered the Ā tasting room with it’s soaring ceilings and the “cork LOVE” display Ā playing off the slogan Virginia is for (wine) Lovers. Chloe and Elliott walked us through the extensive line up of wines produced at Veritas. Two wines of special note were first, Ā Elliott’s baby, a 2013Ā RosĆ©, which my sister is taking back to Plumpton College to brag on his winemaking skills. It was fun sampling wine with Ashton and getting the guided tour of the cellar and doing some barrel tastings. Ā

The other was the Kenmar, made with Ā Traminette grapes ( a hybrid of Gewurtztraminer and Joannes ā€“Seyve (JS) Ā from Cornell. Emily’s Ā Veritas 2005 Ā Kenmar brought national Ā attention to this young female winemaker as the winner of the Judge’s Choice Competition at the 2007 National Women’s Wine Competition in California. Ā Chloe explained the history of this wine, named in remembrance of her grandparents, Kenneth and Marjorie who passed away during 2001, the year of their first vintage. Her grandmother enjoyed sweet wines and asked that one be made to her taste, thus the Kenmar was born. As Chloe shared the sweet story about her grandmother, we couldn’t help but get teary eyed along with her.Ā My favorite wine was the Harlequin Reserve Chardonnay 2012, a little oaky, buttery and served later at home with our favorite cedar planked Alaskan salmon. I admit that I do like creamy chardonnays…what’s wrong with that?

Chloe Guides the Wine Tasting

Our tour culminated at the winery, off horseback, (no drinking and riding despite our posed photographs to show off the link to the vineyards). Ā If you can arrange a horseback tour of the vineyards, try to arrange it during the weekdays when the tasting room is quieter and you can sit by the grand fireplace or really take your time learning about the wines. I cannot recommend this enough and look forward to the soonest opportunity to ride along again. Contact Ashton to arrange your vineyard tour atĀ 434) 531-9679, he DOES answer his phone šŸ™‚

The Other Side of the Mountain – Rockbridge Vineyard

Ā

Spending most of our time on the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, we tend to forget about the Shenandoah Valley and all the beauty just less than an hour from Charlottesville. The “Valley” has much to offer including the P. Buckley Moss MuseumĀ which containsĀ the permanent collection of Pat Buckley Moss’s Ā art work offering visitors a retrospective tour of her art and life. It features not only religious art, the Virginia collection, but also other modernistic styles not typically associated with Pat’s folksy style.Ā Ā South of Staunton Ā and just off of Interstate 81 in Raphine, Virginia, is a wonderful winery and vineyards started before the more recent surge in the Commonwealth’s grape-growing ventures.Ā  Rockbridge VineyardĀ Ā is the result of the dreams of Shepherd Ā Rouse’s early interest in wine after spendingĀ a semester Ā in Germany as a Washington and Lee University geology student.Ā  Three years later he returned to Germany on a Fulbright scholarship andĀ  decided to learn how to produce fine wine in Virginia. Unlike some of theĀ “gentleman vineyard owners” (nothing wrong with that by the way), Shep has a Masters degree in Enology from University of California at Davis and worked for several noteworthy wineries includingĀ Schramsberg, Chateau St. Jean and Carneros Creek .

Holiday Open House

After receiving a timelyĀ Ā Ā invitation to the Christmas Open House at Rockbridge, we crossed the mountain into “dairyland”.Ā Ā Red barns, silos, grazing cows and rolling farmland unfoldedĀ at a higher elevation than one normally sees grapes cultivated in Virginia. We rolled up the crunchy gravel driveway to the Rockbridge tasting room just before noon.Ā  At 11:00 the tasting bar was full and guests were nibbling on comfort food including a barley leek soup, marinated meatballs and Sheps Mom’s recipe for hot cheese dip. Jane Rouse, co-owner and Shep’s wife kept things lively while bustling about making sure that each person was warmly greeted while handling errands at the same time.Ā  We were very appreciative of her attentiveness and joined the othersĀ in the tasting with Jane pouring for us. Some of their bottlesĀ Ā labels feature a drawing of Natural Bridge, located in Rockbridge andĀ one of the oldest tourist destinations in the United States with 20 stories of towering rock walls creating the bridge.Ā  The “Reserve” wines are labeled with the De Chiel name hearkening from Shep’s FrenchĀ heritage.Ā Ā Proud of Rockbridge County, Jane encouraged us to visit other sites while in the area and tipped us off to one of the prettier scenic drives in Virginia just west of the vineyards. She also recommended a visit to Wade’s Mill, a short drive down 606. Wade’s Mill is a working flour mill dating back to 1750 and powered by a 21-foot water wheel that is fed by a nearby stream.

The Wines

We started the tasting with the 2010 Pinot Noir Blanc de Noir light bodied with peachy aromas and a sparkling wine quality. A very nice summer porch swing wine in my opinion.Ā  The 2010 DeChiel Chardonnay Reserve aged in French oak has a buttery taste without being too oaky. The Tuscarora Red at $10 a bottle is their best seller, a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chambourcin. My personal favorite was the 2007 DeChiel Cabernet Franc Reserve, very smooth and well balanced but full bodied and I plan on serving it this weekend. The 2008 DeChiel Meritage is a blend of 5 Bordeaux grapes, we had it with a traditional Carne Guisada (Mexican Stew) and it paired very well.Ā  A “fun” wine Jeremiah’s (like the bullfrog) and a “mighty fine wine”, Ā it’s a wine for even non-wine lovers tasting more like concord grapes than wine. Be sure to ask about their Eiswein, V d’Or!

The Rouses have opened up the barnĀ for events and is an ideal spot for small weddings, parties and receptions. Check with them about the reasonable price for the facility. Rustic, well lit, tables provided and plenty of ambience.

A Lovely Weekend in the Country

All in all, we found the drive well worthwhile.Ā  A lovely drive, country hospitality, fun gifts in the tasting room including local art work, good wine and a good time. Hard to beat when you’re looking for something different to do for a relaxing weekend. As Ferris Buehler would say, “I highly recommend it!”.

The Battle of Pork versus Cork!

Toasting Diet and Exercise!

….OR You can’t look like Twiggy if you drink like Miss Piggy!Ā  Does anyone even remember Twiggy anymore? Ā I had the recent good fortune to win 6 (SIX) WEEKS with a personal trainer at a local gym plus the vitamins and supplements from GNCĀ for the same period of time!Ā  WooHoooo!Ā  On the other hand, I am now closely monitoring my alcohol consumption and also trying to justify it as well.

I notice when I am trudging to nowhere onĀ the Ā treadmill, I occasionally glance (peer) at the calories burned and visualize them in “Glasses of Wine Burned”.Ā  I wish the ellipticalĀ machine, Ā stairmasterĀ and treadmill would have an icon of wine glasses.Ā As you burned 100 calories, Ā a glass would fill with a robust red color! Ā At the point whenĀ you eventually surpass 2 glasses,Ā  the additional calories- burnedĀ would be Ā gravy.Ā Ā Ā Actually a bonus, Ā in less fattening terminology.

I searched online to gather more information Ā to support the reason I can continue with moderate wine drinking while dieting and found Myth Busters about WineĀ  and another worthwhile site, Ā a wine calorie counter.Ā Ā Bear Ā in mind that most of these charts are based on 5 oz. glasses.Ā Ā Ultimately Ā it appears that on average Ā it comes down to approximately 20 calories per ounce orĀ 120 calories for aĀ six-ounce glass!

I am now barely two weeks in and am losing a couple of inches, gaining muscle but still have a long way to go abdominally, or is that I have an abominably long way to go?Ā  Either way,Ā  I have minimized my wine drinking and wine tasting a tad and is the reason this post is not highlighting one of our wonderful Virginia wineries!Ā  Look for another post after Tuesday when I have the luxury ofĀ  a gourmetĀ dinnerĀ Ā presented by Ā Loudoun County’s French Chef William Walden ofĀ  The Goodstone Inn and Estate andĀ Ā pairings ofĀ Ā award-winningĀ Loudoun wines!Ā  My trainer, Jose, said some extra treadmill time the day of and day after and I shouldn’t be too farĀ off track.Ā  I like Jose šŸ™‚

If you’re unable to break away on the weekend, stop byĀ during the weekĀ and pick up a bottle of Norton wine for Kris’s homemade brownies!Ā Ā I borrowed the recipe from the Keswick blog:

Double NortonĀ Brownies

Weā€™ve had a lot of requests for the recipe for Krisā€™ brownies that we had in the tasting room last weekend, so here it is!Ā  Itā€™s really simple!
Ā
Just take a regular box of brownie mix (chocolate or fudge) andĀ substituteĀ Norton wine for the water andĀ 1/4 of the amount of vegetable oil that the mix calls for with Norton chocolate sauce.Ā  Mix it together and bake as directed.
The chocolate sauce will make a more fudgyĀ texture so you can use less or more depending on how fudgy you want them.Ā Ā

To make an extra special treat, weĀ topped themĀ with strawberries dipped in whipped topping (we used equal parts mascarpone cheese andĀ whipped topping, sugared to taste) and rolled in coconutĀ and then drizzled the whole thingĀ with more Norton chocolate sauce!Ā

Glass House Winery: A Confection of Chocolate, Wine and the Tropics

Have you ever taken a vacation to a remote destination on a tropical island and returned wanting to tell all your friends, but really thinking it better to keep the secret to yourself?Ā  Our experience at Glass House Winery was just that, a treat to savor and enhanced only by the prospect of sharing it with others. Ā Glass House Winery in Free Union, Virginia was only opened a few months ago and word is rapidly spreading.

Inside Glass House

The winery is strategically sited, embraced by rows of grapevines overlooking a small, geese populated lake with a backdrop of Buck Mountain.Ā Ā  The structure of the winery is striking, an eclectic juncture of a copper clad tasting room and a soaring tropical greenhouse, thus the name Glass House.Ā  Jeff and Michelle Sanders spent substantial time (five years) on the island of Roatan off the coast of Honduras and recreated some of that lush tropical atmosphere in their greenhouse.Ā  The greenhouse serves as a conservatory for Kumquats, Banana TreesĀ  producing ice cream flavored bananas, a highly prized Royal Hawaiian Pineapple and tables graced by tiny Sago Palms.

Applauding the 21st Amendment

Ā  The floor is a Brazilian wood similar to teak and the climate is carefully controlled with a vented roof and mechanical sun screen.Ā  A perfectly delightful spot for a light picnic (self provided) complemented by a bottle of artisan wine. The greenhouse can accommodate 88 guests seated for weddings or events! Invite me, please!

Park Here!

Ā Attention to detail begins in the mosaic studded retaining wall in the parking lot and proceeds to the doorway where, Vina, the wine goddess greets you, grapes in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. Several other clever whimsical touches including a giraffe create a fun and light hearted foyer.

Accents of pineapples adorn niches and shelves, carrying on the logo of Glass House and reinforcing the symbol of Virginia hospitality.Ā  The winery puppy, Dogbert, eagerly approached us with a wagging tail, and then stretched out for a nap in the warm sun by the patio door.

Michelle's Art Work

Michelle Sanders, owner and Chocolatier Extraordinaire, offered us glasses for tasting and a history of the young winery. We started with a 2009 Pinot Gris followed by a 2009 Viognier.Ā  The Pinot Gris was unremarkable and light, but the Viognier had more character and with a creamy texture and nice bouquet.Ā  The third wine was the Cvillian, a red blend of Chambourcin, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes grown on the property and on nearby vineyards.Ā  We purchased the next wine, the Twenty First, a Meritage blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes and named after the 21st amendment.Ā  Can you recall the significance of that amendment? Ā It also had the most fruit and was quite good.

On our visit to DuCard Winery, in Madison, we were tipped off to the dessert wine.Ā  Marty Mitchell, the tasting room manager at DuCard was so delighted with it that she actually is credited with naming the wine, Meglio Del Sesso, her initial observation.Ā  In Italian it translates to ā€œBetter than ā€¦ā€ use your imagination!Ā  We sipped this along with a sampling of Michelleā€™s own hand crafted chocolate Red Wine Cream ā€“ a ganache made from Norton wine and dark chocolate, hand enrobed in 72% dark chocolate. Ā An exquisite combination!Ā  The chocolates are artistically packaged and sold only at the winery.Ā  The gourmet chocolates are Early Grey, Salted Caramel and Espresso and sold by the dozen.Ā  A perfect Valentines gift for your sweetheart!

And this is Winter!
